T.Price and Son 1869 - 1915
A guide to dating the photos from the studio of T Price, St Helier, who was active in Jersey from 1869, and whose son continued the business until at least 1915.
T Price was born in 1839 and died in 1899. He began studio work in London around 1862, and set up in Jersey in 1869.
His photos can be dated by the style of backstamp, and later by the negative number on the back. If you have additional information that could narrow these dates down further please get in touch.

1869 - 1872 TP in oval
1873 - 1881 oblong design, from 1873 - 1875 blank front to photo, from 1876 - 1881 with name and address on front.
1876 - 1881 showing name and address on front.
1882 - 1888 ‘established 20 years’ fancy leaf design, from 1882 - 1883 with no street number, from 1884 - 1888 number 2, Peter Street.
1889 - 1890 design with bamboo and birds, negative numbers appear on back, earliest noted is 16357. For date list of negative numbers see below. Front of CDV has ‘T Price Jersey’ and monogram.
From 1891 the studio traded as T Price & Son. The same backstamp was adapted by adding ‘& Son’ and the front of the photo has ‘T Price & Son Jersey’
During this period (1891) a different backstamp was briefly used, with words only, and the front printed in brown instead of embossed gold. The address is now 2 & 4 Peter Street Jersey
Around 1893 a new design was introduced, landscape format showing cherubs with paper and a camera. The front was a slight variation of the previous card.

A design with an artists easel was used from 1896 - 1906, with minor variations. Earlier photos have the name and address on the front as ‘T Price & Son Jersey’ after 1898 the address on the front of the photo is ‘T Price & Son 2 & 4 Peter Street Jersey’
